Burlington Bees News Release
Byron Buxton hit a walk-off grand slam to give the Cedar Rapids Kernels a 7-6 win over the Burlington Bees on Thursday night at Perfect Game Field.
Jairo Diaz entered the ninth with his team leading 6-3, but immediately hit Travis Harrison with an 0-2 pitch to start the inning. Michael Quesada flied out for the first out, but Candido Pimentel followed with a double to right on an 0-2 count to put two men on for Tyler Grimes. Grimes pinch-hit for Jeremias Pineda and was immediately hit by the first pitch delivered by Diaz. Buxton stepped to the plate and belted a no-doubter over the left field wall to give the Kernels (27-12) the win over the Bees (13-23).
Burlington trailed early on, falling behind in the second on a two-run home run by Quesdada off of Patrick Lowery. The Bees cut the deficit in half on a double by Michael Bolaski that scored Kyle Johnson. Lowery went six-plus innings, allowing six hits and two walks. He retired 11 straight batters during his outing.
In the sixth inning, the Bees took advantage of three errors to score three unearned runs against Mason Melotakis. Pedro Toribio reached on an error by Jorge Polanco to start the inning. Toribio stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error by Quesada. The next batter was Sherman Johnson, who reached on an error by Candido Pimentel, allowing Toribio to tie the game. Kyle Johnson reached on a bunt single and both Johnson's came home on a two-run single by Jonathan Walsh.
The 4-2 lead was trimmed in half when the Kernels got a run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Adam Brett Walker.
The Bees added two insurances run in the seventh, courtesy of a two-run single from Kyle Johnson. The insurance runs held up until the ninth, when the Kernels hit a walk-off grand slam.
Burlington will now head home for a four-game series with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
