Cougars Select Czech Forward in CHL Import Draft
June 27, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Prince George Cougars News Release
PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The Prince George Cougars Hockey Club is pleased to announce the selection of 2001-born Czech forward Filip Koffer, 10th overall, in the 2019 CHL Import Draft this morning.
A product of Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic, Koffer spent the majority of last season with HC Dynamo Pardubice in the Czech Under-19 league. In 38 games he compiled 10 goals and 28 assists for 38 points finishing fifth in team scoring. He played in another 12 games with the men's team, in the Czech Extraliga, where he recorded one assist.
"We're pleased to add a player of Koffer's quality through the Import Draft," stated General Manager & Interim Head Coach Mark Lamb. "He's committed to playing in the WHL and he has a nice blend of speed, skill and physicality. We look forward to seeing him in Training Camp."
Koffer already has an impressive international resume. He was the Czech Republic's top scorer at the 2019 World Hockey Championship in April, with four goals and two assists for six points in five games. He was named one of their top three players of the tournament and was teammates with Cougars' forward Matej Toman. He also played for the Czechs at the 2018 Hlinka-Gretzky Cup and won a bronze medal at the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
Steven Ellis from The Hockey News, who covers international hockey extensively, says Koffer burst onto the scene at the U-18 World Championship, "He had an explosive tournament. He spends a lot of time around the net and is very patient with the puck and brings a lot of energy."
