Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill. - The Kane County Cougars used great pitching and a four-run seventh-inning rally to beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 5-3, Sunday afternoon in front of 6,317 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Four pitchers combined to allow one earned run, Conner Crumbliss reached base five times in as many chances, and Max Stassi and Mike Gilmartin each drove in two. The Cougars moved back to one game over .500 and guaranteed themselves a winning record -- currently 5-3 -- on their nine-game homestand.

Starter Ian Krol gave up a first-inning run for his only blemish during a solid outing. He gave up three hits, walked one and fanned four in a no-decision. The Cougars took him off the hook in the sixth when Gilmartin drew a bases-loaded walk to tie it, 1-1. Then in the seventh they put Connor Hoehn (2-0) in line for a win with a four-run outburst. Crumbliss scored on a throwing error, Max Stassi nailed a two-run single and Gilmartin added a sacrifice fly for a 5-1 game.

Hoehn tossed three innings of one-hit shutout relief for the victory. A.J. Huttenlocker logged a scoreless eighth, and Jose Guzman yielded two unearned runs in the ninth before ending it, 5-3. C.J. Bressoud (0-1) took the loss for Cedar Rapids.

The Cougars (6-5) and Kernels (5-6) conclude the three-game set Monday at noon CT. Rob Gilliam (0-1, 8.31) will oppose Tyler Skaggs (0-1, 1.80). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and at www.kccougars.com, with pregame coverage starting at 11:45 a.m.
