Great Lakes Loons News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps opened their three-game series with the Great Lakes Loons with a 4-2 win on a chilly, windy Saturday night in front of 2,243 fans at Fifth Third Ballpark. Jerry Sands led the Loons with three extra base hits - two doubles and a triple.
Both teams squandered multiple scoring opportunities in the game. West Michigan left 14 runners on base including the bases loaded three times. Second baseman Mike Gosse batted thrice with the bases loaded but failed to drive a runner home, stranding a total of 10 for the game. The Loons had a runner at third with less than two outs in the second, third and fourth innings, but failed to score in those three frames.
The Whitecaps (5-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on a solo home run by DH Alexis Espinoza. They later loaded the bases in the inning on three straight walks by Loons starter Elisaul Pimentel, who escaped the jam by retiring Gosse.
In the fifth, the Whitecaps capitalized on two errors charged to Loons third baseman Johan Garcia for three runs, two earned.
Trailing 4-0, the Loons (6-4) cut the lead in half. After a leadoff walk by shortstop Christian Lara, Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Sands recorded back-to-back standup triples to plate one run each.
Ramon Lebron (1-0) threw five innings to record the win, pitching around three wild pitches. Victor Larez recorded the final 12 outs for a lengthy first save.
For the Loons, Pimentel (0-1) notched his first loss, walking three in four-plus innings, surrendering five hits and two earned runs. J.B. Paxson and Andy Suiter combined for four innings without allowing an earned run.
The Loons and Whitecaps meet for the second game of a three game series in Comstock Park Sunday afternoon at 1pm. Right-hander Josh Wall (0-0, 6.00 ERA) will face righty Trevor Feeney (1-0, 1.38). The game will be carried live on ESPN 100.9-FM.
The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
