Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Andrew Means' single to right field brought in Didi Gregorius from third base with the winning run with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Dayton Dragons defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks 3-2 on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 7,719 at Fifth Third Field.
It was the fourth extra inning game for the Dragons in 11 contests in 2010. They have won three of the four including all three extra inning games at home.
Gregorius singled to right with one out in the 11th to get the winning rally started. Henry Rodriguez hit a bouncer back to South Bend pitcher Bradin Hagens, who threw wildly to second base, allowing Gregorius to go to third. Means followed with a hard grounder past the first baseman into right field to bring in Gregorius and end the game.
Dragons reliever Donnie Joseph (2-0) faced only one batter to earn the win, getting a strikeout with two men on base in the top of the 11th. Dragons starter Josh Ravin pitched extremely well over his six innings of work. He allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) with one walk and eight strikeouts. He struck out six over the first three innings. Reliever Doug Salinas was also outstanding, working four and two-thirds scoreless innings. Dragons pitchers walked only one batter and struck out 14 in the game.
Dayton finished with 10 hits. Means was 3 for 6 to lead the way. Chris Richburg and Kevin Coddington each had two hits. Shane Carlson had a big two-out run-scoring single in the sixth that tied the game at 2-2. Henry Rodriguez went 0 for 6 as his hitting streak ended at 10 games.
The series concludes with game three on Monday at 7:00 p.m. Pedro Villarreal (0-0, 3.27) will start for Dayton against South Bend's Charles Brewer (0-2, 3.60) will start for South Bend. The home stand continues Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. against the West Michigan Whitecaps in the first game of a three-game set.
