Kane County Cougars News Release
PEORIA, Ill. - For the second night in a row, the Kane County Cougars never led against the Peoria Chiefs until a game-changing ninth-inning rally sparked them to a victory. Friday night the Cougars scored three runs in the top of the ninth to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead and an eventual 4-3 win at O'Brien Field. The Cougars took two out of three from the Chiefs to clam third straight series and eighth out of the last 11.
Trailing, 2-1, Rashun Dixon led off the ninth with a single against Corey Martin (1-2) and took third on a Mike Gilmartin double. Then pinch-hitter Jose Crisotomo singled home Dixon to make it 2-2. Gilmartin was tagged out near home on a fielder's choice by Jason Christian, but the rundown lasted long enough for Crisotomo to reach third and Christian to take second. As the Chiefs tried to walk Juan Nunez intentionally to load the bases, Martin fired a wild pitch to score Crisotomo for a 3-2 lead. Then Leonardo Gil belted a run-scoring single to plate Christian and make it 4-2. Jose Guzman yielded one in the ninth but converted a save for the second night in a row, his 10th overall.
The Cougars fell behind, 1-0, in the second but tied it in the fifth when Nunez singled in Myrio Richard. Starter Justin Marks worked into the sixth inning but departed with a man on base, and that runner came home to score off A.J. Huttenlocker. Marks gave up two runs on two hits, walked four and struck out 10 over 5 2/3 innings, leaving in line for a loss but getting a no-decision. Bo Schultz (3-1) got the win. He allowed one run over 1 1/3 innings before Guzman entered in the ninth to save it.
The Cougars (8-7, 40-44) return home Saturday night at 6 CT to commence a nine-game, 10-day homestand with the opener of a three-game series against the Clinton LumberKings (8-6, 45-38). Rob Gilliam (5-6, 4.11) will face Taylor Stanton (6-4, 3.52). The game will be broadcast on WBIG 1280-AM and online at www.kccougars.com with pre-game coverage starting at 5:45 p.m.
