Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels received a big boost from newly-activated third baseman Jeremy Cruz in a 6-2 win over the Bees on Friday night at Community Field.

Cruz, activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, finished 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, three RBI, and a stolen base, including a two-run double in the second inning which staked the Kernels to a lead that they would not relinquish. The double came with no outs and runners on first and third. Cruz was thrown out on the same play attempting to move to third on a throw to the plate.

He reached Nick Wooley (L, 2-6) for a solo homer in the third to put Cedar Rapids up by three, and singled in the sixth ahead of Jon Karcich's two-run longball that made it 5-0.

The Bees did not score until the bottom of the seventh, when Carlo Testa led off with a walk and Joey Lewis doubled him home to make it 5-1. Another run came home when Deivy Batista laced a two-out single to right-center, but the Bees could pull no closer. Cedar Rapids added an insurance run in the ninth off of Scott Kelley to seal the victory.

The Bees still won the series by virtue of taking the first two games. Burlington is unbeaten (3-0-1) in their last four series. The loss does, however, snap the squad's seven-game winning streak at home.

The team heads to Wisconsin for a three-game series and enjoys an off day on Tuesday before opening a six-game homestand on Wednesday with the first-ever visit from the Bowling Green Hot Rods on Kids Eat Free Wednesday. All kids 12 and under will enjoy a free hot dog and a drink with their paid admission.
