Hawks Gain 2010 Draftee, but Lose All-Star Shortstop to DL

South Bend, IN - In conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, the South Bend Silver Hawks have announced that fourth round selection Kevin Munson has joined the active roster. He takes the roster spot of shortstop Chris Owings, who was placed on the disabled list retroactive to Tuesday, July 6th with plantar fasciitis.
Munson was the fourth round selection (121st overall) by the Diamondbacks in this June's draft from James Madison University. He becomes the first 2010 draft pick to play for South Bend this season.
Munson pitched exclusively in relief for the James Madison Dukes, compiling 73 appearances over three seasons. He finished with a career record of 13-4 and 2.35 ERA while saving 23 games as the closer. In 2009, he was named the Colonial Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year and First Team All-CAA.
Owings, on the other hand, has not yet played in the second half due to plantar fasciitis. His last appearance in 2010 was the Midwest League All-Star Game in Fort Wayne after being named to the team as a reserve infielder.
Even as the youngest player on the Silver Hawks roster, the 18-year-old Owings emerged as a great offensive weapon in the first half. He is batting .298 with five home runs and 28 RBIs in 62 games for South Bend this season.
The South Bend roster currently stands at 25 active players plus four on the disabled list. The Midwest League allows for 25 active players.
