Kane County Cougars News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars' offense is back, and the team is back in sole possession of first place in the Western Division. After crushing the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 11-3, Wednesday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Stadium, the Cougars own a one-game lead over the Kernels with four first-half games remaining. They are inching closer to clinching a playoff spot for the fifth time in seven seasons as an Oakland A's affiliate. Pedro Figueroa pitched a fourth straight quality start, and the Cougars' offense scored in each of the first six innings to enjoy a rout.
Steve Kleen, Grant Desme and Petey Paramore each collected a first-inning RBI against Tyler Chatwood (3-4) to give the Cougars a quick 3-0 lead. Then Matt Ray singled home Jason Christian in the second. After the Kernels got a run in the bottom half against Figueroa, Jeremy Barfield belted a three-run homer for a 7-1 game. The Kernels managed one more run in the third, but Christian launched a two-run homer in the fourth, Franklin Hernandez poked a sacrifice fly in the fifth and Kleen homered in the sixth to make it 11-2.
Figueroa (7-2) yielded his final run in the sixth and left after the frame. He gave up three runs on seven hits over six innings in the win. It was his fifth quality start in the last six games. Jamie Richmond handled the final three frames with perfect relief to get credit for his fourth save.
Back in first place by a game, the Cougars (39-27) return to Elfstrom Stadium on Thursday night at 6:30 CDT for the start of a four-game series against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Kenny Smalley (6-2, 1.94) will oppose Trey Watten (2-6, 4.01).
