South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - By taking both games of the doubleheader from South Bend Wednesday night, the Great Lakes Loons completed a four game series sweep. With a 4-0 loss in game one and a 2-1 loss in game two, South Bend has now dropped six in a row and 14 of their last 15 games.
In game one, South Bend was held to just three hits by Loons starter Josh Walter (WP, 4-1). Walter struck out four and walked three in his 5.0 innings, earning his fourth win of the season. Luis Garcia (ND) pitched the final two innings in perfect fashion for a 4-0 victory.
The Loons scored single runs in the first, second, fourth, and sixth innings against Silver Hawks starter Randy Rodriguez (LP, 1-4). Nick Buss had two hits and two runs scored, with Matt Wallach driving him in both times to lead the Loons offense.
Game two belonged to the pitchers early, as neither team could muster much offense. In his first appearance of the year for South Bend, starter Keny Sosa (ND) did not allow a hit over his 3.0 innings. Great Lakes starter Bobby Blevins (WP, 5-4) enjoyed success in game two as well. The right hander for the Loons went 6.0 innings, allowing just three hits and striking out four in shutting out South Bend.
The Loons finally broke through against reliever Daniel Vasquez (LP, 2-1) in the sixth inning. With two outs, Jaime Pedroza walked and stole second. Alfredo Silverio drove him in with a single to left for the 1-0 lead. After another walk, Anthony Hatch drove in Silverio with a single to right, pushing the lead to 2-0.
Great Lakes needed the runs as Javy Guerra (SV, 15) struggled in the bottom of the seventh. Marc Krauss picked up his first professional hit in his Silver Hawks debut - a double to left field. Alberto Diaz drove him in with a single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Guerra got the next two batters to pop up on the infield, completing the sweep.
South Bend remains at home to open a four game series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Thursday night at 7:00 PM Eastern Time. The Silver Hawks will start RHP Brett Moorhouse (2-7, 3.55 ERA) with the TinCaps sending RHP Anthony Bass (5-3, 2.17 ERA) to the mound. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
