Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - The Great Lakes Loons' pitching staff allowed just one run in a doubleheader sweep of the South Bend Silver Hawks Wednesday night from Stanley Coveleski Stadium. The Loons won by scores of 4-0 and 2-1, with both games lasting seven innings per Minor League Baseball doubleheader rules.
The Silver Hawks did not score until the 14th inning of the doubleheader. The Loons have now won a franchise-best seven straight and are a franchise-high eight games over .500 (37-29). The Loons also improve their intra-divisional record to 27-15.
In the first game, Josh Walter and Luis Garcia combined on the seven-inning shutout. Walter allowed just three hits in five innings, striking out four. Garcia followed with two perfect innings of relief.
The Loons pounded out 12 hits against the South Bend duo of Randy Rodriguez and Justin Mace. Matt Wallach drove in two for the Loons. Dee Gordon, Kyle Russell, Nick Buss and Anthony Hatch recorded two hits in the Loons' win.
Bobby Blevins was the story of Game 2. The right-hander allowed just three hits in six shutout innings. He threw 71 pitches, 48 for strikes, and allowed just one three-ball count (to Marc Kraus in the second) and four fly ball outs.
Javy Guerra entered and recorded his 15th save of the season, but it was not without its difficulties. Guerra allowed a run and stranded the tying run at second base before inducing a Rossmel Perez pop out to end the game.
Both Loons runs came in the sixth inning and all the action came with two outs. Jaime Pedroza drew a walk against reliever Daniel Vazquez. He stole second and scored on a single by Alfredo Silverio. After a walk to Russell, Hatch singled home Silverio for the second run.
The Loons return to Dow Diamond Thursday to begin a four-game homestand to conclude the first half of the season. Game time Thursday is 7:05pm against the Lansing Lugnuts. Right-hander JonMichael Redding (8-2, 5.03) is scheduled to start for the Loons against Lansing righty Josh Wells (3-7, 7.35).
Former Tigers right-hander Dan Petry will be appearing at the ballpark Thursday as a part of the Loons' 1984 Tigers Championship celebration, presented by MidMichigan Health. Tickets are available by calling 989-837-BALL or by visiting Loons.com.
The Great Lakes Loons are the third-year Single-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
