Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Extra innings at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark couldn't provide the Kane County Cougars with enough time to finish a three-game sweep of the Burlington Bees as they fell, 6-5, on Friday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
For the third consecutive ballgame, the Cougars (47-65, 17-29) claimed the early advantage with Jeimer Candelario's two-out single bringing home Oliver Zapata to make it a 1-0 ballgame. Burlington (44-68, 18-29) grabbed a pair in the top of the second against Tyler Skulina. Julio Concepcion doubled and scored on a Skulina throwing error. Zach Wright came home on a base hit from Garrett Cannizaro.
Burlington extended their advantage with a run in the third and two more in the fourth. Wade Hinkle doubled Exicardo Cayones to the dish in the third while Pedro Toribio and Angel Rosa came through with run-scoring base hits in the fourth frame against Al Yevoli.
Rob Zastryzny made his Midwest League debut in the fifth as he began a string of three straight scoreless innings while surrendering two hits and fanning the last batter he faced. While Zastryzny was on the hill, Carlos Escobar brought the Cougars back from behind. Escobar cranked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth before a two-run single evened the game at 5-5 in the fifth.
Neither team was able to manage a run until the Bees claimed the lead in the 10th against Michael Hamann (1-1). Hinkle walked and advanced one base each on singles from Concepcion and Wright. Riley Good's sac fly drew Hinkle home to give the Bees the lead. Cam Bedrosian (S, 6) worked around a single in the bottom of the 10th after Kurt Spomer (3-3) tossed two shutout innings.
The Cougars welcome the Cedar Rapids Kernels to Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Saturday night with a 6:30 first pitch. Right-hander Felix Pena (4-4) will start for the Cougars against fellow righty Jose Berrios (6-5). For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
