August 9, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Phillip Ervin hit his first Midwest League home run and drove in three runs to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 9-7 victory over the Lake County Captains on Friday night at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons improved to 26-22 in the second half with the win. They are two and one-half games out of the wildcard slot and three games out of first pending the completion of tonight's Great Lakes at Bowling Green game.
The Dragons built a 3-1 lead over the first three innings, getting two runs without a hit in the first and then adding one more in the third on a run-scoring double by Ervin. Lake County answered with three runs in the fourth when Richard Stock lined a home run to right field with two men on base to give the Captains a 4-3 lead.
The Dragons battled back and took the lead with a five-run fifth, taking advantage of three Lake County errors in the inning. Seth Mejias-Brean's run-scoring single tied the game, two runs scored on errors, Tanner Rahier drove in a run with a fielder's choice, and Brandon Dailey added a sacrifice fly to make it 8-4. Ervin blasted a long home run to left field in the seventh to extend the Dayton lead to 9-4. Lake County scored three in the eighth to close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso (6-3) earned the win. He worked six innings, allowing four runs on five hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Joel Bender earned his second save, recording the final five outs. Bender allowed one hit and one walk but no runs with one strikeout.
The Dragons collected eight hits. Along with Ervin, Sammy Diaz had two hits and scored two runs. Mejias-Brean and Jesse Winker each had a hit and scored twice.
The Dragons infield turned in a great defensive performance. Diaz made a spectacular diving play at second to save a run. Mejias-Brean made a great play at third and shortstop Zach Vincej saved a run with an excellent play.
The Dragons travel to Fort Wayne to take on the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Amir Garrett (0-2, 4.91) will start for the Dragons against Fort Wayne's Walker Weickel (3-5, 5.34). All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
