Hot Rods Win Pitchers' Duel

Great Lakes Loons News Release
BOWLING GREEN, KY - Kevin Taylor's pinch hit single in the top of the eighth broke up Bowling Green's combined no-hit bid Saturday night. But the line drive to left field was the lone hit of the night for the Great Lakes Loons in a 3-0 loss to the Hot Rods.
The game's start was delayed 1:14 by heavy rains but once the game began, things progressed swiftly.
Both lefty starters Miguel Sulbaran for the Loons and the Hot Rods' Jordan Harrison were perfect through three innings.
The Loons loaded the bases in the fourth on an error by Harrison, a hit batsman of Aaron Miller and a walk by Jeremy Rathjen but could not score.
Bowling Green responded in the fourth inning. Andrew Toles led off the frame with an infield single, coupled with a throwing error by Brandon Trinkwon. Toles stole third base as Joey Rickard walked. Then Toles scored on an RBI fielder's choice hit into by Luke Maile.
After throwing 91 pitches (55 strikes), Harrison was removed from the game in favor of Ryan Garton. Garton walked Malcolm Holland on three pitches. He then retired Trinkwon on a fly ball to center. But Taylor batted for Leo Rodriguez and ended the Hot Rods' bid for history with a line drive to left.
Holland advanced to third on a fly out by Miller, and Taylor eventually stole second with Tyler Ogle at the plate. But Ogle was robbed by Tommy Coyle on a clutch back-handed defensive play at second base to end the inning.
The Hot Rods added two big insurance runs in the eighth off reliever Jonathan Martinez to extend their lead to three runs.
Sulbaran (6-4) was charged with one earned run in four innings with five strikeouts but took the loss. Martinez worked the next four and was charged with two runs. Harrison (3-2) struck out just three in seven no-hit innings. Garton allowed the lone Loons hit and notched the final six outs for his eighth save.
The Loons (28-19 second half, 55-62 overall) begin a brief three-game homestand Saturday night at Dow Diamond with the first game of a three-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts (19-28, 51-65) at 7:05pm. Saturday is Country Western Night with a post-game Fireworks Loontacular, powered by Dow Corning. Tickets are available at Loons.com or by calling 989-837-BALL. Righty Brandon Martinez (1-3, 4.70 ERA) is scheduled to matchup with lefty Matt Boyd (0-1, 1.00). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM at ESPN1009.com.
