Peoria Chiefs News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Pawtucket Red Sox for the third consecutive game on Friday, 5-4. The Chiefs took advantage of two Pawtucket errors, while starting pitcher Caleb Clay tied a career high with nine strikeouts.
Syracuse (56-64) wasted no time getting the bats going, plating two runs in the first inning. Eury Perez led off the inning with a base hit through the right side of the infield. Jeff Kobernus followed with a single into right field, before Danny Espinosa's groundout to first advanced Perez to third base and Kobernus to second base. The next batter, Tyler Moore, lined a single up the middle, scoring both Perez and Kobernus, giving the Chiefs an early 2-0 lead.
Pawtucket (61-59) needed four innings until it got on the scoreboard. In the top of the fourth, Mark Hamilton launched a one-out double into deep left field. Alex Hassan followed with a single into left field, driving in Hamilton for the Pawtucket's first run.
In the top of the fifth inning, Pawtucket took its first lead of the game. Tony Thomas began the rally with a leadoff double into left field. Then, with Ronald Bermudez at bat, Caleb Clay hurled a wild pitch, allowing Thomas to advance to third base. Three pitches later, Bermudez's base hit brought Thomas to the plate, tying the game at 2-2. After a Jackie Bradley walk, Xander Bogaerts came to the plate with runners on first and second. With no outs and a 1-1 count, the Paw Sox attempted a double steal, which resulted in Bermudez's caught stealing at third base. Later in the at-bat, Bogaerts flew out to right field for the second out. The Paw Sox took the lead, though, when Will Middlebrooks singled home Bradley in the next at-bat. The rally ended when Mark Hamilton struck out swinging, but Pawtucket led 3-2.
The Chiefs regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Following a leadoff walk to Chris Marrero, Zach Walters lined a base hit up the middle. With runners on first and second, Jhonatan Solano came to the plate. Solano laid down a bunt in front of the pitcher's mound, which was fielded by catcher Dan Butler. Butler's throw was off target and careened all the way into right field. On the play, both Marrero and Walters scored. Syracuse was not done, though, as Will Rhymes singled in the next at-bat to bring home Solano and give the Chiefs a 5-3 lead.
Pawtucket would not go down without a fight, though. In the top of the ninth, Jonathan Diaz singled to begin the inning. After a Thomas single put runners on the corners, Bermudez hit a fly ball to center field, resulting in a sacrifice fly and cutting the deficit to 5-4. Chiefs pitcher Erik Davis then struck out Bradley for the second out before inducing a Bogaerts fly out to end the game.
The Syracuse bullpen combined for four innings of one-run baseball. Tyler Robertson tossed two innings, allowing just two hits. Drew Storen followed up with a perfect eighth inning before Davis closed the game, picking up his 14th save of the season.
The Chiefs and Paw Sox resume their five-game, four-day series on Saturday at 7:00. Syracuse sends right-hander Ryan Tatusko to the mound. He'll oppose Pawtucket right-hander Allen Webster.
