Kane County Cougars News Release
CLINTON, Iowa - With a 5-0 loss Saturday night in the opener of a four-game series at Alliant Energy Field against the Clinton LumberKings, the Kane County Cougars suffered a third straight defeat. During the skid, the Cougars' offense has mustered just two runs and 16 hits in 27 innings. The pitching staff has yielded 15 runs during the losing streak, 11 of which have come in the first three innings of the game.
Cougars starter Shawn Haviland (6-4) suffered the loss. He gave up five runs -- four earned -- on six hits, walked three and fanned five over four innings. Jamie Richmond tossed three scoreless innings, and Trey Barham posted one, but the offense could not come back.
Newcomer Leonardo Gil, added to the Cougars' roster before the game, went 2-for-2 in his debut. Jeremy Barfield and Chris Berroa singled for the only other Cougars hits. Aaron Pribanic (7-4) pitched six strong innings for the Clinton win.
The Cougars are also battered with injuries, as regulars Dusty Coleman, David Thomas, Franklin Hernandez and Matt Ray were unavailable due to various ailments.
Game 2 of the series is Sunday night at 6 CDT. Kenny Smalley (6-3, 2.19) will pitch for the Cougars (4-5, 45-34), and Kenn Kasparek (4-4, 2.75) is scheduled to pitch for the LumberKings (5-4, 45-34).
