Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The South Bend Silver Hawks (3-6; 30-47) lost their starting pitcher to an injury as well as an early three-run lead, but recovered to defeat the Lansing Lugnuts (3-6; 29-49), 7-3, before an Independence Day crowd of 11,160 at Oldsmobile Park.
After quickly falling behind 3-0 in the first inning, the Lugnuts clawed back into the game with two-out RBI base hits in the first, fourth, and sixth innings, completing the comeback on Balbino Fuenmayor's run-scoring double.
But 2009 2nd Round Draft Pick Marc Krauss broke the tie in the top of the seventh, lining a two-run single off of Ryan Koch (2-6) to give the Silver Hawks a lead they would not relinquish.
Bryan Woodall (2-3) earned the win for South Bend with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, highlighting a brilliant effort from the Hawks' bullpen.
South Bend starter Taylor Sinclair exited the game due to injury in the bottom of the second inning with two outs and two strikes on A.J. Jimenez. Jordan Meaker entered the game in place of Sinclair and worked four innings to bridge the gap to Woodall and closer T.J. Hose.
The Silver Hawks' pitchers were supported by a 17-hit offensive barrage, including a 4-for-5 night from leadoff hitter Reynaldo Navarro.
Chris Emanuele went 3-for-4 in the losing effort for the Lugnuts, who saw manager Clayton McCullough ejected in the bottom of the third inning. The ejection followed home plate umpire Allen Alvarez's ruling that Tyler Pastornicky had left third base too early on Johermyn Chavez's fly out to left.
The two teams play the second game of their four-game series on a Kids Day Sunday at 2:05 p.m. at Oldsmobile Park, Lugnuts left-hander John Anderson (2-5, 4.88) getting the start opposite Silver Hawks right-hander Brett Moorhouse (3-8, 3.62).
