South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Lansing, MI - The South Bend Silver Hawks celebrated America's birthday with some fireworks against the Lansing Lugnuts, blasting a season high 17 hits on their way to a 7-3 victory on Saturday night.
Reynaldo Navarro led the hit parade with his first four-hit game of the season, scoring two runs and driving in one as well. A.J. Pollock added his first three-hit game as a pro while Marc Krauss drove in three to help the Hawks to the victory in the series opener.
South Bend jumped on Lansing starter Chase Lirette (ND) for three runs on five hits in the top of the first. Navarro started the game with a triple, and scored on a RBI single from Alfredo Marte. After Pollock singled, Krauss had a RBI single and Justin Parker added a sacrifice fly for the early 3-0 lead.
Lansing came right back with a run against Taylor Sinclair (ND) in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Brian Van Kirk doubled and then scored on a RBI single from Johermyn Chavez. Sinclair got the final out and then the first two of the second before leaving early with an undetermined injury, giving the ball over to Jordan Meaker (ND) in long relief.
Meaker pitched well after being called in to pitch in the emergency fill-in role. He got the final out in the second, and three outs in the third, before allowing a two out RBI single to Jon Talley in the fourth to make it a 3-2 game. Meaker had a 1-2-3 fifth, but gave up a two out RBI double to Balbino Fuenmayor in the sixth to knot the game at three, resulting in a no decision after a well-pitched long relief stint.
South Bend answered immediately with a two run top of the seventh against reliever Ryan Koch (LP, 2-6). Victor Estevez and Navarro each singled to start the inning, and Pollock's single loaded the bases for Krauss. Krauss picked up his second and third RBIs of the night with a single down the right field line, putting the Hawks back in front by a 5-3 score.
The Silver Hawks scored two more in the top of the eighth, with Navarro picking up his fourth hit, a bases loaded single to center, and Marte drawing a bases loaded walk for the other RBI. Marte added two RBIs to his total on Saturday night, giving him a team leading 41 on the season.
Bryan Woodall (WP, 2-3) was the beneficiary of all the runs and hits, earning a win in relief. Woodall went 2.1 scoreless innings, and has now lowered his ERA to 4.15 from 7.08 on June 5th. T.J. Hose (ND) got the final three outs.
The four game series continues Sunday afternoon at Lansing with a 2:05 PM Eastern Time first pitch. RHP Brett Moorhouse (3-8, 3.62 ERA) will be in the starting role for South Bend, while Lansing counters with LHP John Anderson (2-5, 4.88 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 1:45 PM on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
