
Kernels rally for 5-4 win over Snappers

The Cedar Rapids Kernels scored five unanswered runs en route to a 5-4 series sweep of the Beloit Snappers on Friday night at Pohlman Field in Beloit, WI. Anel De Los Santos delivered a two out; two run single in the sixth and finished the night with 3 RBI. The win is the Kernels fourth in a row over Beloit and 7-0 vs. the Snappers this season.
Tyson Auer capped the Kernels rally in the ninth with a pinch-hit RBI single off Beloit reliever Blake Martin (1-1). Roberto Lopez was 2-4 as Alexi Amarista and Chris Fox had a double and scored a run. Beloit starter Bobby Lanigan allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five over 5.2 innings as Ramon Santana was 2-4 with a HR and 3 RBI and Aaron Hicks was 2-4 with a double, triple and RBI.
Kernels starter Manuel Flores was roughed up for four runs (three earned) on eight hits over six innings. He allowed two walks and struck out three in a no-decision effort. Nick Pugliese (2-1) pitched two innings of relief for the win, walking one and striking out two, and Andrew Taylor notched his second save, retiring the Snappers in order in the ninth.
The playoff-bound Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium and open a 10-game home stand on Saturday, July 4th, starting with Armed Forces Night. Gates open at 4 pm and the first 1,000 children, 12 and under, receive a free regulation youth-size baseball bat from McDonald's. The Kernels will wear special camouflage jerseys that will be sold during the game via a silent auction. After the game, enjoy the music of the Large Midgets on the concourse, play catch in the outfield and run the bases, and at dusk, enjoy a special Fourth of July FIREWORKS show. First pitch between the Kernels and Quad Cities River Bandits is scheduled for 5:05 pm.
