Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, Illinois - Joey Rose concluded an 11-inning game with an RBI single to give the Kane County Cougars (68-48, 33-14) a 10-9 walk-off win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels (66-51, 27-20) on Friday night in front of 7,895 fans at Northwestern Medicine Field. The Cougars finished the seven-game homestand with a 6-1 record and with three walk-off wins.
The Cougars led 1-0 after the first on Buddy Kennedy's RBI single. Cedar Rapids took the lead in the fourth on two throwing errors, one by third baseman Buddy Kennedy and the other by right fielder Tra Holmes. The Cougars exploded for five runs in the fifth. Zack Shannon, Kennedy, Zac Almond and Rose all had RBIs in the inning. Cedar Rapids trimmed it to a two-run game in the sixth on a two-run double by Jared Akins.
In the ninth, Cedar Rapids put two runners aboard with one out. Spencer Steer smacked a game-tying double into the right field corner. Gabe Snyder pushed the Kernels in front with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the ninth, Blaze Alexander's RBI single evened the score, 7-7.
In the tenth, Tyler Webb made it 8-7 Cedar Rapids on an RBI single. The Cougars retaliated with a game-tying single from Zack Shannon in the bottom half. In the eleventh, automatic runner Spencer Steer was picked off second base, but Gabe Snyder hit a go-ahead solo homer for Cedar Rapids.
The winning rally started with Blaze Alexander's lead-off, go-ahead triple in the ninth. He later scored on Rose's game-winning single.
Jose Cuas (3-2) earned the win with 2.2 innings of two-run baseball. Dylan Thomas (0-1) suffered the loss, allowed three runs (one earned) in 1.1 innings.
The Cougars head to Burlington for a three-game road series, beginning Saturday night with a 6:30 first pitch. Purchase tickets by calling 630-282-8811 or online at kccougars.com.
