June 24, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Kane County Cougars News Release

Clinton, IA- Jose Pineda's two-run homer in the fourth inning Friday night gave the Kane County Cougars a lead they never relinquished, as they held for a 5-2 win against the Clinton LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field. Pitcher Tony Evans won for the third time in as many starts.

Clinton got a run in the second against Evans for a 1-0 game, but Pineda blasted a shot to left against John Bannister with Myron Leslie aboard for a 2-1 Cougars advantage. Kane County added to it in the fifth. With Kevin Melillo at third and Javier Herrera at first, Raul Padron bounced a ball to third that was thrown away at home, scoring Melillo. The Clinton catcher Lizahio Baez tried to nab Padron advancing to second but threw the ball into the outfield, allowing Herrera to scamper home for a 5-1 game. The Cougars made it 6-1 in the ninth when Kory Wayment tripled and scored on Padron's fielder's choice. Tomas Cabaniel relieved Evans to complete the seventh, worked a perfect eighth and surrendered an unearned tally in the last of the ninth for a 5-2 final.

Evans (3-0) went 6 2/3 innings, gave up a run on six hits, walked three and struck out five for the victory. Bannister (4-7) got the loss, and Cabaniel saved his second game. Game three of the four-game set in Iowa is Saturday night at 7 CDT. Jared Trout (2-3, 4.19) takes the hill for the Cougars (1-1) against right-hander Ace Walker (3-7, 2.97)
