Southwest Michigan wins before crowd of 5,107 at C.O. Brown

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays used a four-run third inning to coast to a 4-3 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks on United Way night at C.O. Brown Stadium on Friday night.

Andy Sonnanstine pitched seven innings allowing seven hits, three runs and four strikeouts to earn his seventh win of the season and the team's first of the second half.

The four-run third started with a single to Josh Asanovich and a Francisco Leandro walk. Fernando Perez followed with his seventh triple of the season to bring in two runs. After a lineout, Patrick Cottrell hit another triple to score Perez before a sacrifice fly from Chris Nowak scored the fourth run.

South Bend hit two home runs off Sonnanstine but it wasn't enough as Jose De La Cruz pitched two scoreless innings for his ninth save.

The Devil Rays boasted a crowd of 5,107 on United Way Night. It is the second sellout of the season for the Devil Rays following a June 12 crowd of 6,003.

The Devil Rays will send LHP Jarrad Lavergne (2-6, 4.90) to the hill against South Bend's A.J. Shappi (10-1, 2.79) on Saturday evening. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will be in C.O. Brown Stadium on Saturday night for another 7:05 p.m. start. Don't miss this opportunity to see the world famous Cheerleaders!
