Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Calvin Hayes had an RBI single in the top of the eighth inning and the Swing bullpen weathered Timber Rattler threats over the final two innings as the Swing of the Quad Cities held off Wisconsin, 2-1, on Friday night at Fox Cities Stadium. Dennis Dove got no decision despite six scoreless innings, while the Swing took advantage of a pair of Wisconsin errors as they stayed perfect on the second half.
After the Rattlers (39-33, 0-2 second half) scored to tie the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Swing (38-33, 2-0) squeaked across the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning. Matt Shepherd reached second on a throwing error to open the inning, bringing Calvin Hayes to the plate. Hayes, who was 3-for-5 in his Swing debut on Thursday, initially squared to bunt. But he pulled back and slashed a line drive to the vacant shortstop hole, scoring Shepherd with a slide for the 2-1 Swing lead.
The Quad Cities bullpen preserved the lead from there. Quinton Robertson came on in the bottom of the eighth, and promptly allowed a leadoff single to Sebastien Boucher. But he struck out Yung Chi Chen before coaxing consecutive popouts to end the threat. In the ninth inning, Mike Sillman allowed a leadoff double, but struck out Rob Johnson who was trying to bunt for the first out of the inning. After Brent Johnson lined out to center for the second out, Sillman quickly moved up in the count, 0-2, against Brandon Green. Sillman missed with three straight pitches to fill the count before striking out Green on a fastball to the outside part of the plate, sealing the win and his 15th save of the season.
The Swing jumped out to the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Juan Lucena started the frame with a chopper to the right side, reaching when first baseman Marshall Hubbard misplayed it. Rick Ankiel then drew a walk, and Simon Williams put the Swing on top with a line single to right.
Dennis Dove worked six scoreless innings for the Swing, striking out eight and retiring the first nine batters of the night. He found himself in only one jam on the night, as the Rattlers used two walks and a single to load the bases with two outs in the sixth. But Dove struck out cleanup hitter Hubbard for the third time of the night to end the threat. Dove has made a combined two starts at Wisconsin on the season, working 12 scoreless innings.
Jackson Paz, who got the final out of the seventh inning, picked up the win in his sixth Swing outing. In 76 career outings, including seven starts, Paz now owns an 18-2 record.
Dove left in line for his sixth victory of the year, but the Rattlers tied it up in the bottom of the seventh. Mike Wilson starting the inning with a hustling infield single to third, and was bunted to second. Luis Soto grounded a single through the right side of the infield to tie it up, 1-1.
UP NEXT: The Swing and Timber Rattlers continue the series on Saturday night, as the Swing send Matt Scherer (2-5, 3.98) to the mound against Julio Santiago (0-1, 3.80). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, and pregame coverage on Progressive Talk AM 1270 will begin at 6:50.
