Peoria Chiefs News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Peoria Chiefs rallied past the Cedar Rapids Kernels 5-4 Friday night at New Veterans Memorial Stadium in Iowa. With the win the Chiefs are 1-1 on the half and 36-36 overall.
Trailing 4-2 and down to their final at-bat the Chiefs came out swinging against Kernels reliever Miguel Gonzalez. Alan Rick led off with a doubled down the third base line and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Sam Fuld walked and Eric Patterson singled home Rick to make it a 4-3 game. After a wild pitch, Aaron Sisk walked and Ryan Harvey was hit by a pitch to force home Fuld and tie the game 4-4. Luis Montanez bounced into a fielders' choice before Oscar Bernard's sac fly to left gave the Chiefs a 5-4 lead as Sisk scored from third. The Chiefs jumped on Fernando Rodriguez in the 1st inning but ultimately let him off the hook in scoring just once. With one out Sisk doubled to left and scored on a RBI double from Harvey as the Chiefs took a 1-0 lead. But Rodriguez recovered to strike out both Montanez and Bernard to get out of the inning.
Cedar Rapids took advantage of a Chiefs error to take the lead in the bottom of the 2nd. With one out, Richard Giannotti reached on a grounder through the legs of Patterson and then stole second. Jordan Renz doubled to right scoring Giannotti to the game 1-1. After a single and a stolen base, Renz scored on a gound out off the bat of Chris Walston as the Kernels took a 2-1 lead.
The Chiefs tied the game 2-2 in the top of the 5th on Luis Montanez' solo homer to left-center. The homer was the left-fielder's eighth of the season and gave him a team-high 41 RBI. Cedar Rapids came right back in the bottom of the 5th and took a 3-2 lead on a solo homer from center-fielder Richard Giannotti.
The Kernels added to their lead on another Peoria miscue. Giannotti led off the inning with a double off the right field wall and advanced to third on a errant pickoff throw by Chris Shaver. Jordan Renz launched a flyball to the track in left-center that Sam Fuld clearly caught for a sac fly and then dropped the ball trying to throw home. But the base umpire called it a dropped flyball and ruled Renz safe at second and Giannotti sage at home for a 4-2 Kernels lead. Chiefs manager Julio Garcia was ejected from the game during the ensuing argument.
Shaver took a no-decision throwing seven strong innings. He allowed four runs, two earned on five hits while striking out four. Adalberto Mendez (1-0) picked up the win with a perfect 8th inning and Tim Layden earned his 3rd save with a 1-2-3 9th inning.
Pepsi Player of the Game
Oscar Bernard (C) - Bernard made the most of his first start at DH on the season. He singled in the 8th inning and his line-drive sac fly gave the Chiefs the 5-4 lead in the 9th. He finished 1-for-4 with the GW RBI.
