Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - A bench-clearing brawl in the bottom of the ninth inning was an ugly ending to a hot Friday night as the Beloit Snappers (2-0, 35-37) beat the Burlington Bees (0-2, 34-38) 8-3 at Community Field tonight. The incident started when Pete Maestrales charged the mound after being hit by a pitch from JP Martinez with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. It was the second batter hit by Martinez in the inning. After order was restored, Maestrales, Ed Lucas, and Geraldo Valentin were ejected from the Bees and Martinez and first baseman Mark Zamojc were ejected for the Snappers. This is the Bees' third bench-clearing incident of the season, but the first where punches were actually thrown.

The Snappers got on the board in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Deacon Burns doubled to left center and David Winfree lined a homer just over the wall and just inside the foul pole in left to give the Snappers a 2-0 lead. The added a run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Landon Burt and another in the third on an RBI single by Zamojc. Bees' starter Patrick Hicklen (4-3) would allow one more run in the fifth. Winfree doubled, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a groundout by Trevor Plouffe. Gabe DeHoyos took over in the sixth and worked three innings in relief. He allowed two runs (one earned) in the sixth on an RBI single by Luke Hughes and a sacrifice fly by Burns. Chad Blackwell pitched the top of the ninth and allowed a solo homer to Plouffe for the Snappers final run.

Snappers' starter David Shinskie (1-5) allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits in six innings for his first win of the year. Irving Falu doubled with one out in the third to extend his hitting streak to twelve games and scored as Lucas reached on a fielder's choice. Falu's streak is now the longest by a Bees' player this season. Lucas led off the sixth with a single, went to third on an errant pickoff attempt, and scored on a groundout by Damaso Espino. Kyle Aselton pitched two scoreless innings in relief to get through the eighth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Martinez hit Mario Lisson with a pitch. The Snappers weren't holding Lisson on, so he took second and advanced to third on a groundout. Cody Cure made his professional debut tonight, taking over for Kenard Springer in the eighth, and struck out for the second out of the inning. Falu kept the inning alive with an infield single on a chopper over the mound that drove in Lisson. Falu wasn't being held on, so he took second base. Martinez then drilled Maestrales in the back with the next pitch and the fight began. Lucas followed him out from the on-deck circle and took a forearm to the face from Zamojc. Lucas went to the hospital for x-rays on what is believed to be a broken nose.

The Bees and Snappers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Luis Cota (2-3, 2.48) will start for the Bees against RH Kyle Waldrop (3-5, 4.97) for the Snappers. The gates will open at 6:00 for a Wendy's Family Night. Mom, Dad, and all the kids in your house get in for $14 and Louisa Communications will give away a bicycle. Tomorrow is also Y-Sports night. Kids can wear their team shirt from any YMCA sport and get in free. The Bees will recognize all of our sponsors as part of Sponsor Appreciation Night and Mt. Pleasant/New London/Danville Community Weekend continues. Tomorrow's game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
