Silver Hawks make their mark in All-Star Game
June 24, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
PEORIA, Ill. -- South Bend's Silver Hawks were brilliant Tuesday under the brightest lights of the Midwest League baseball season.
Outfielder Jereme Milons drove in three runs with two hits and was voted the game's most valuable player as Coach Mark Haley's East team defeated the West Division's finest, 4-2, in Midwest All-Star game action.
Milons also had two superb catches, one of them when he backed into the outfield fence and another on a stretch-out dive in left-center.
Carlos Gonzales had three singles in five at-bats and made five catches in right field -- three of them beyond the routine.
A.J. Shappi, who pitched only the first inning, was the winning pitcher under all-star game scoring rules -- the pitcher who was the pitcher of record when his team takes the lead and holds it gets the victory. He pitched a 1-2-3 first inning.
Emilio Bonafacio had a walk in two trips to the plate, Agustin Murillo had a walk in three trips. Allen Mottram and Javier Brito were each 0-for-2. Alberto Gonzalez was 0-for-1.
South Bend pitcher Josh Perrault worked the sixth inning and allowed the first West run on hits by Peoria's Luis Montanez and Clinton's Emerson Frostad.
"There is lot of parity in this league, and we had lots of guys who excelled,' said Haley.
He didn't use pitcher Ross Ohlendorf who worked on Sunday, and saved reliever Matt Elliott in case the game went extra innings.
"We weren't going to have a major league situation where we had to stop the game because we ran out of pitchers,' said Haley.
Haley's team scored enough to make a winner of Shappi in the second inning.
Consecutive singles by Carlos Gonzalez, Wilkin Ramirez of West Michigan and Tony Gutierez of Dayton preceded a two-RBI single by Milons.
Milons doubled to the right field corner in the fourth, scoring West Michigan's Brent Dlugach who had singled.
"I love Peoria, I love the stadium,' said a happy Haley, who never before had managed an all-star team.

Silver Hawks Win The First Half Title
SOUTH BEND - During their three game slide, the South Bend Silver Hawks made it difficult on themselves in attempting to secure the first half eastern division crown. Saturday night at the Cove the Hawks were finally able to pop the cork on champagne bottles that have chilled for three days. Coupled with a Fort Wayne Wizards loss the South Bend Silver Hawks clinched the first half division title with a 4-1 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps.
The Hawks got on the board first when Cesar Nicolas crushed his eighth home run of the campaign to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead through five innings.
After the Whitecaps knotted the game in the visitor's half of the sixth frame, the Hawks bounced back to plate three. With one retired, Agustin Murillo walked and moved to second when second baseman Steve Young mishandled a Carlos Gonzalez ground ball allowing Gonzalez to reach as well. Cesar Nicolas broke the tie game by driving in Murillo with a run scoring single, while Javier Brito's fielder's choice advanced Carlos Gonzalez to third, putting runners at the corners. Allen Mottram closed the scoring when he scored two with a booming double off the right center field wall.
Steven Jackson got the win and improves to 5-2, while Josh Rainwater drops to 1-2. Matt Elliott came out of the pen to record his seventeenth save of the season.
