Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers outhit the Swing of the Quad Cities 6-2, but Quad Cities scored a pair of unearned runs to beat Wisconsin 2-1 Friday night. The Rattlers committed three errors in the game. Swing starting pitcher Dennis Dove and Rattler starter Aaron Jensen both pitched great, but neither was around for the decision.
The Swing (38-33 overall, 2-0 second half) took advantage of an error and a walk to put runners at first and second with no outs in the top of the fourth. A sacrifice bunt by Mike Ferris moved the runners up one base each. Simon Wiliams drove in the first run of the game with the first hit of the game and the Swing led 1-0.
Wisconsin (39-33, 0-2) had a chance to get Dove in the bottom of the sixth inning. They loaded the bases with two outs on a walk, a single, and another walk. But, Dove struck out Marshall Hubbard for the third time in the game to end the threat.
The Rattlers tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. Mike Wilson beat out an infield single to start the frame. Rob Johnson dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Wilson to second. Luis Soto, who made his Timber Rattler debut on Friday, singled sharply to right and Wilson raced home with the tying run.
But, the Rattler defense betrayed the cause again. Matt Shepherd reached second on an error to start the eighth against Rattler reliever Cibney Bello. Calvin Hayes blooped in a single to leftcenter and Shepherd scored to make the score 2-1.
Wisconsin got the lead-off man aboard in the bottom of the eighth on a Sebastien Boucher single. But, Boucher was left standing at first when the inning ended.
In the ninth, Wilson doubled off Quad Cities closer Mike Sillman to start the inning. But, Sillman struck out Rob Johnson, got Brent Johnson to line out to center, and struck out Brandon Green to get his sixteenth save of the season.
The starting pitching was outstanding. Jensen went seven innings and allowed one unearned run on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts. Dove, who retired the first nine men he faced, went six shutout innings, allowed two hits, and struck out eight.
Game three of the series is Saturday night. Julio Santiago (0-1, 3.80ERA) will be the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Matt Scherer (2-5, 3.98ERA) is slated to start for the Swing. Game time is 7:05pm.
