Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Angel Franco's RBI triple and Geulin Beltre's single, which plated Franco, broke open what had been a one-run game in the bottom of the fifth as the Kane County Cougars won for the 20th time in the second half of their Midwest League season, beating the Cedar Rapids Kernels 5-1.
The victory left the Cougars in a second half first place tie with the Quad Cities River Bandits with whom they open a three-game series in Iowa Saturday night.
Julio Aparicio's infield single gave the Cougars a 1-0 advantage as Jake Kuebler raced home from third in the second inning. Following a Cedar Rapids sacrifice fly from Ricky Alvarez, which scored the Kernels' only run in the fourth, Kane County grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of that frame when Orlando Calixte's sac fly allowed Brett Eibner, who had singled to open the inning, to score the tie-breaker. Following the back-to-back hits from Franco and Beltre in the fifth, Beltre would account for the game's final run, scoring on a passed ball from Kernels catcher Marcus Nidiffer.
After a month of July in which he would go 0-4 and foster a 6.98 ERA., Leondy Perez stopped the Kernels in their tracks, going seven innings while allowing just five hits and the single run, recording four strikeouts along the way. Cedar Rapids' Brian Diemer fell to 8-8 with the loss.
The Cougars 13-hit attack featured a 3-for-4 performance from Franco as well as multiple hit efforts from Beltre, Eibner and Aparicio. Cheslor Cuthbert's fourth inning single extended his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games, the best by any Cougar this season.
The Cougars return to the diamond Saturday evening in Davenport, IA when they open a three-game series against first half playoff qualifier Quad Cities. Kane County will send RHP Santiago Garrido to the mound at 7 PM opposing RHP Zach Russell for the River Bandits.
