Whitecaps avoid sweep on late Moya dinger

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - Steven Moya hammered a tiebreaking eighth inning home run to give the West Michigan Whitecaps (17-16, 49-53) a 6-5 win over the Lansing Lugnuts (22-11, 60-40) on Friday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
The outcome avoided a three-game sweep for the Whitecaps, with the Lugnuts finishing the season with a 12-3 record against their intrastate rival.
Moya's eighth long-ball came off reliever Brandon Berl (Loss, 3-1), who allowed four hits and walked one in two innings of work.
The Lugnuts took a 5-3 lead with four runs in the sixth inning off Whitecaps starter Josue Carreno, with doubles by Garis Pena and Markus Brisker and a pair of singles from Marcus Knecht and Michael Crouse. The lead would not stand long.
In the bottom of the sixth, West Michigan tied the score against Lugnuts reliever Dustin Antolin on a two-run Clay Jones single.
In the top of the eighth, Patrick Cooper (Win, 5-5) came in to face Knecht with two outs and struck him out looking with Jake Marisnick standing on second. The Caps took the lead in the home half of the inning, and sent the crowd of 8,553 home happy.
Knecht finished the game 4-for-5 with his eleventh home run of the season, a double, and a pair of singles. Brisker went 3-for-5 with a double, and Oliver Dominguez added a two-hit night in defeat.
Right-hander Tucker Jensen made his Midwest League debut for Lansing, tossing five innings, surrendering three runs on four hits in a no-decision.
The Lugs return to Cooley Law School Stadium for a seven-game homestand against the Lake County Captains and the South Bend Silver Hawks, starting Saturday night with Neil Diamond Tribute Night. Right-hander Marcus Walden (5-2, 2.80) will be on the bump for Lansing, countered by Lake County righty Felix Sterling (1-0, 1.50).
