Geneva, IL - The Kernels started fast but fell short as Kane County trimmed Cedar Rapids 6-5 on Thursday evening. The Kernels came out swinging in the 1st inning. Travis Witherspoon and Rolando Gomez smacked back to back triples to begin the ballgame and give the Kernels a 1-0 lead. Jeremy Cruz then singled to bring home Gomez and give the Kernels a 2-0 lead.
Kane County's Cheslor Cuthbert gave the Cougars a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning with a 3-run home run to left field off of Kernels starter P.J. Jang. The Kernels tied the game 3-3 in the 2nd inning. Justin Bass singled to begin the inning and came home on a RBI groundout by Francis Larson.
The Cougars scored three more in the bottom of the 2nd inning, taking a 6-3 lead. Julio Aparicio singled to begin the inning. Jang issued three consecutive walks to plate Aparicio, giving Kane County a 4-3 lead. Later in the inning, two runs scored when Brian Fletcher reached on a throwing by Kernels shortstop Rolando Gomez to make the score 6-3.
P.J. Jang (1-2) took the loss for the Kernels. He went 1.1 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on four hits while striking out one and walking four. The Kernels bullpen shut down Kane County's offense the rest of the way. Beau Brooks went 3.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out two and walking one. Justin La Tempa went 2.2 innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out one and walking one. Daniel Tillman recorded the only batter he faced in the 8th inning.
The Kernels added single runs in the 4th and 7th innings. Bass doubled home Alvarez in the 4th inning, making the score 6-4. Larson brought home Brandon Decker with a RBI single in the 7th inning. Jason Adam (4-6) picked up the win for Kane County, going five innings and allowing four runs on six hits. Nick Rogers picked up his fourth save, pitching the 8th and 9th innings and allowing no runs on one hit.
The Kernels conclude the series at the nine-game road trip on Friday at Kane County beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Kernels return home on Saturday vs. Beloit at 6:35 p.m. Morgan Hawk brings you the action on the radio home of Kernels baseball, 1450 AM and 93.1 FM, KMRY.
