Today's Game: The Dayton Dragons (affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds) meet the Fort Wayne TinCaps (affiliate of the San Diego Padres) in the third game of a three-game series. Season Series: Dayton 10, Fort Wayne 4 (at Dayton: Dragons 4, TinCaps 1).
Last Night: Dayton defeated Fort Wayne 6-1 as David Vidal belted two home runs and drove in four runs. Starting pitcher Daniel Renken continued a fine second half by earning the win. He allowed one unearned run on three hits in five and two-thirds innings. Blaine Howell and Drew Hayes combined for 3.1 scoreless innings of relief. Billy Hamilton and Jaren Matthews also had two hits for Dayton.
Today's Dragons Starting Pitcher: Tanner Robles makes his 14th start with the Dragons tonight. Robles rejoins the Dragons after three appearances with the AZL Reds in Goodyear, Arizona, where he went 2-0, 2.770. In his last start on July 20 vs. the AZL Padres, he earned the win (6 IP, 2 H, 0 R 2 BB, 9 SO). Robles has not pitched for the Dragons since June 28. Robles has struggled to consistently throw strikes this season (46 BB in 49 IP). Left-handed hitters have gone just 12 for 66, .182 against him on the year...2010: Began pro career with Billings and selected as Pioneer League All-Star...Opposing batters combined to hit just .179 against him....Struggled over first five starts with Mustangs (16.1 IP, 14 ER, 20 BB) but was dominant over final nine starts (44 IP, 6 ER, 1.23 ERA, 21 H, 12 BB, 50 SO)...Spent three seasons at Oregon State University...Went 5-4, 3.43 in 14 starts as junior in spring of 2010...Had incredible high school career at Cottonwood High School in Murray, Utah, posting a perfect 33-0 record over four seasons and earning Utah's Gatorade Player of the Year award two times...Went 10-0 as a high school senior, posting 109 strikeouts in 50 innings.
Individual Notes
* Ronald Torreyes leads the Midwest League and all of Single-A baseball (5 leagues) in batting average and base hits in the second half. He ranks second in runs scored (behind Billy Hamilton). Since June 24 when the second half began, Torreyes is second in all of minor league baseball in base hits (former Dragon Denis Phipps of Carolina is first). Torreyes is batting .407 since joining the club on June 17. Torreyes is batting .579 in his last nine games.
* Billy Hamilton is batting .362 over his last 23 games, raising his average from .223 to .256. He has 75 stolen bases to set the Dragons club record for single-season and career steals. He leads all of professional baseball in steals.
* David Vidal is batting .351 with 7 HR and 32 RBI in his last 31 games, raising his average from .267 to .298.Donald Lutz has hit safely in 17 of his last 18 games, batting .362 with five home runs.
* Daniel Wolford over his last 25 G: 42.1 IP, 4 R, 3 ER, 0.64 ERA to lower his season ERA from 4.50 to 1.49. He has not allowed a run since June 9 (13 games, 23.1 innings).
