Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva, IL - On Monday night at Elfstrom Stadium, the South Bend Silver Hawks (9-19) produced a season high 14 hits, to beat the Kane County Cougars (22-9), 11-8. Silver Hawks starter, Adriano Rosario (2-1) pitched five tough innings to earn his first road win of the year. He was tagged for nine hits and seven runs (three earned) - both season highs. Shawn Kohn (1-1) surrendered three runs in 2 1/3 innings to suffer the loss for Kane County.
South Bend came out swinging, scoring six runs before the Cougars even batted. Chris Mowday was knocked out after a 1/3 of an inning, after giving up six runs, four hits and three walks. The outing for the Australian native was the shortest for a starter this season, and the second time he's been knocked out in the first inning.
The Cougars were up to the challenge, plating home three runs in the second inning off Rosario. Nelson Cruz scored on Brian Stavisky's RBI single - Kory Wayment capped off the inning with a two run home run.
The theme of fourth inning was two out runs. Jon-Mark Sprowl gave South Bend a four run lead with a two out single. Then the Cougars batted in what turned out to be a wild bottom of the fourth. After two outs, Jason Basil reached on an error, starting a four-run rally, which tied the game at seven. J.P. Schmidt delivered a two-run double, and scored the tying run on an error by the pitcher.
The tie game wouldn't last long. Jarred Ball provided the biggest hit of the night, a two out single giving South Bend the lead for good. Sean Luellwitz was 2-for-4, knocking in four runs, including the 11th run in the eighth.
John McCurdy gave the Cougars' fans a reason to cheer in the ninth. He blasted his first Midwest League home run to dead center field off Sergio Lizarraga.
The Cougars and Silver Hawks lock up tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 PM. Cristian Gonzalez RHP (3-0, 1.20) makes a spot start for Kane County, he'll match up against Dustin Nippert RHP (2-1, 1.97), who gets the nod for South Bend.
