
Dayton slugger\'s 2-run single in 8th beats Kernels, 7-4

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â Travis Wong's two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning broke a 3-3 tie and sent the Dayton Dragons past the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 7-4, Monday night before a paid crowd of 1,243 at New Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Kernels (16-14), and their fifth in their last eight home games. Dayton (15-16) won for the sixth time in its last eight games.
The Kernels had a season-high eight extra base hits among their 11 safeties. Erick Aybar had three hits. Former Marion prep Alex Dvorsky had a triple and a double.
Dayton took a 2-0 lead just two batters into the game when Kevin Howard swatted his first home run of the season.
The Kernels struck back with single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-2 lead. Back-to-back doubles by B.J. Weed and Quan Cosby plated the Kernels' first run. Dvorsky tripled and scored on Justin Hancock's double in the fourth that tied the game, 2-2. Back-to-back doubles by David Gates and Caleb Maher put the Kernels ahead, 3-2, in the fifth.
Howard's sixth-inning home run tied the game, 3-3.
Phil Wilson, making his 2003 debut for the Kernels, worked six innings and gave up four hits and three runs. Hayden Gliemmo (1-1) took the loss.
