West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Even Joel Zumaya's brilliant 14-strikeout performance wouldn't be enough to guarantee a Whitecaps victory on Monday evening. After allowing just three baserunners through seven innings, reliever Jermy Rodriguez (0-1) couldn't hold the 'Caps 1-0 lead as the Snappers plated two in the eighth inning to take the victory 2-1.

Joel Zumaya pitched one of the most impressive games in Whitecaps history falling one strikeout shy of tying the team record of 15 set by Alan Webb in 1998. Zumaya gave up just three singles and struck out Snappers top slugger Prince Fielder all three times he faced him. Every batter in the Snappers lineup struck out at least once against Zumaya.

Wilton Reynolds got the 'Caps on the board in the fourth inning with an RBI single extending his hitting streak to a Midwest League season-high 14 games. That would be all of the offense the 'Caps could muster as starter Manny Parra (2-0) kept the offense under control.

The 'Caps try to even up the series Tuesday night in the second game versus Beloit. Scheduled starters are Troy Pickford (1-2) for the 'Caps and Tom Wilhelmsen (3-0, 1.52) for the Snappers.
