West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Whitecaps bullpen has been having some problems on the road, but the team's pitchers are still receiving praise. Lefthanded pitcher Jon Connolly has been named the Detroit Tigers minor league pitcher of the month for April, while closer Juan Figueroa has been named the Midwest League's "Rolaids Relief Man" for April.

Connolly won all four of his starts with the team and posted a 0.73 ERA. He topped all Midwest League pitchers in ERA during the month and tied for second with his four victories. Connolly's strong start was aided by a stretch of 17.0 scoreless innings to open the 2003 season. He blanked both Battle Creek and South Bend for six innings in his first two starts April 11 and 16, respectively, and he held Clinton scoreless for the first five innings before surrendering one run in the sixth inning on April 22. Connolly is expected to start on May 8 when the Whitecaps take on Beloit for the final game of the home series.

Figueroa has six saves and a 2.92 ERA. He currently leads the Midwest League in saves and is tied for the lead in appearances.
