PEORIA, Ill. — The Battle Creek Yankees hit three home runs in the second inning and went to defeat the Peoria Chiefs 5-2 in a Midwest League baseball game Monday night at O'Brien Field. It was the fourth straight win for the Yankees, and the seventh straight loss for the Chiefs. Game 2 of the four-game series is Tuesday afternoon.

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on back-to-back doubles by Jayson Drobiak and Omir Santos.

Rudy Guillen and Eric Verbryke led off the second inning with back-to-back homers, then after a Gabe Lopez walk, Willie Vasquez blasted a two-run homer. It was the third homer of the season for Guillen, and the second for both Verbryke and Vasquez. The barrage gave the Yankees a 5-0 lead.

Guillen also had a sixth-inning single and is hitting .542 in his last 24 at-bats. That has raised his average from .197 to .280 during the streak. The Battle Creek outfielder was named MWL Hitter of the Week for April 28 to May 4.

The Chiefs pulled within 5-2 on a two-run homer by Travis Hanson in the bottom of the sixth.

Battle Creek starter Jeremy King pitched eight strong innings to push his record to 2-3. Charlie Isaacson — pitching on his 23rd birthday — pitched the ninth inning.

Both teams are now 16-14. Tuesday's game is a 1 p.m. EDT start.
