Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Keith Couch and the Greenville bullpen authored a four-hit shutout, as the Drive downed the Charleston RiverDogs, 3-0, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of a crowd of 3,032 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Greenville evened its mark at 32-32 with the victory, while Charleston fell to 25-39 and 2-3 on the current homestand.
Both starters were on top of their respective games from the outset. Charleston's Mikey O'Brien retired the first seven men he faced, while Couch (1-1) set down the first five RiverDogs he encountered.
O'Brien sported a big-breaking curveball to complement a powerful fastball that he was able to command to both sides of the plate. The 5-11 right-hander fanned seven Drive batters over 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing only two base knocks and a hit batsman.
Greenville was able to get the wheels of its potent offense churning in the top of the sixth inning versus Charleston reliever Manny Barreda (2-1).
Felix Sanchez legged out an infield single on a ground ball deep to the hole at shortstop, and then moved into scoring position with his league-leading 24th stolen base of the season. Miles Head accounted for the night's first tally two batters later, slugging a sacrifice fly to center field.
The bottom of the Greenville order wreaked havoc in the top of the seventh inning, as the advantage swelled to 3-0.
Henry Ramos grounded a single to right field, and crossed to third base on an opposite field double off the bat of Christian Vazquez. Lucas LeBlanc dunked an RBI single into right field for a 2-0 lead, and the second run of the rally scored on a passed ball that RiverDogs catcher Gary Sanchez was unable to secure.
Couch was excellent in his third start since making the transition from the relief corps, penning 6.0 shutout frames. The Division II Adelphi University (NY) product permitted only three hits, while notching a season-high six strikeouts.
The RiverDogs posed a mild threat against Drive righty Garrett Rau in the bottom of the eighth inning, as Gary Sanchez doubled and Kelvin De Leon walked to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Jose Mojica. Rau induced a groundout from Mojica, and Charle Rosario slammed the door shut in the ninth, striking out the side to record his second save of the year.
BALLPARK FUN: The hugely popular Dora the Explorer navigated her way to The Joe for an evening of baseball and family-oriented fun. Dora visited with fans and took pictures throughout the evening in Doby's Deck. As is the case every Monday, the RiverDogs partnered with a local nonprofit organization to generate exposure and funds for a specific cause on Dogs with a Cause Night , presented by The Bridge at 105.5 FM. This week's featured ally was Camp Happy Days, a summer camp for children who keep a brave, smiling face while battling cancer. Spectators also enjoyed $1 beers in the Ashley View Pub as an extension of the weekend on Hair of the Dog Mondays, presented by 98Rock. Both teams donned the classic uniforms of their parent clubs, with the RiverDogs in Yankees pinstripes and the Drive in Red Sox red alternates.
UP NEXT: Right-hander Zach Nuding (5-4, 5.31 ERA) toes the slab as the RiverDogs host the Drive in the third contest of a four-game set. Fellow righty and former Texas Longhorn standout Brandon Workman (2-4, 3.90 ERA) is slated to throw for Greenville.
