Hickory Crawdads News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - The Hickory Crawdads again tied a season-high with seven runs in the seventh frame, taking the 10-7 win against the Asheville Tourists before 1,777 fans at Historic McCormick Field in Asheville on Monday evening. The Crawdads claimed their seventh win in the last eight games, as they now trail the first-place Hagerstown Suns by only one game in the Northern Division standings with six games remaining in the first half.
After the Tourists (30-34) got on the board with an unearned run in the bottom of the first against South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week RHP Nick Tepesch, the Crawdads (36-27) responded with a run in the third and the fourth to move in front. 2B Odubel Herrera tied it in the third with an RBI double against RHP Peter Tago, before 3B Christian Villanueva belted the 'Dads in front with a solo homer to start the fourth and make it 2-1.
The Tourists moved back in front with two more unearned runs in the fifth, before opening up a 7-2 lead with four tallies against Tepesch and RHP Colby Killian (W, 5-2) in the sixth.
The Crawdads, though, came right back with seven runs against Tago and RHP Juan Gonzalez (L, 0-1) in the top of the seventh. The 'Dads loaded the bases with no one out to spark the rally, and plated the frame's first run on an RBI fielder's choice by 1B Jhonny Gomez. SS Jurickson Profar then skied an RBI double to right field that RF Kyle Parker lost in the lights, scoring LF Alejandro Selen from second and bringing the 'Dads within three, 7-4. A balk by Gonzalez brought in Gomez from third and moved Profar to third, before Herrera struck with another RBI double to plate Profar and make it just a one-run game, 7-6. DH Tomas Telis reached on a single and took second on a throwing error when Parker missed the cut-off man, putting runners at second and third. Herrera then scored from third on an RBI grounder by Villanueva to first base, which was misplayed by 1B Tyler Massey, enabling Villanueva to reach first safely with Telis taking third on the play. RF Josh Richmond struck next with an RBI single and CF Jake Skole capped the rally with a sacrifice fly, lifting Hickory in front, 9-7.
Asheville attempted to come back by loading the bases with two down in the bottom of the seventh, but RHP Ryan Rodebaugh (S, 9) took over on the mound and got out of the jam by striking out 2B Russell Wilson. Rodebaugh tossed the next two innings in scoreless fashion, while the 'Dads added another insurance run with a Telis RBI single in the eighth, and the Crawdads hung on for the 10-7 win.
