Rogers Twirls Gem; GreenJackets Win Second Straight
June 13, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - To say that Augusta GreenJackets starting pitcher Taylor Rogers is on a hot streak would do a disservice to the concept of heat. Rogers fired seven strong innings to pitch the GreenJackets to an 8-3 win over the Lexington Legends on Monday night, earning Rogers his fifth win in his last six starts.
Rogers (6-6) allowed only one run on three hits in his seven innings. He didn't walk anyone and struck out three, retiring 12 of the final 13 hitters he faced. The only blemish in that total was the home run that Chris Wallace hit off Rogers with one out in the seventh.
The GreenJackets handed their starter with plenty of run support and it came early. Adam Duvall provided a first inning home run for the second straight night, a two-out solo shot to put the GreenJackets up a run in the first. The homer pushed Duvall's league-leading total to 16. The Jackets added another in the second when Ehire Adrianza scored from first on a single to center that was bobbled by Lexington center fielder Emilio King. Josh Mazzola provided run number three in the third, scoring from third on a passed ball with two outs to put Augusta up 3-0.
Augusta doubled their lead in the fifth, loading the bases with one out and Devin Harris at the plate. A wild pitch brought home Josh Mazzola from third before Harris scored the other two with a two-run double to push the advantage to 6-0. After Wallace's homer in the seventh for Lexington, the GreenJackets got two more in the bottom half of that inning on a Ryan Lollis RBI double and a Rafael Rodriguez run-scoring groundout.
The Legends got a couple runs in the ninth but Tom Vessella struck out Jhonny Medrano to end the game and give the GreenJackets their second straight win and sixth straight at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
Lexington starter Alex Sogard (1-2) took the loss for the Legends, allowing five runs - three earned - on eight hits and three walks while striking out three.
The GreenJackets will send Mike Kickham (1-3, 4.11) to the mound on Tuesday night as they try to seal their second straight home series win. Lexington will counter with Mike Foltynewicz (2-6, 4.90) for game three of the four-game set. First pitch will come at 7:05 with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
Single-game tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
