June 13, 2011 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
The Augusta GreenJackets built a 6-0 lead after five innings, and went on to beat the Lexington Legends 8-3 Monday night in Augusta.
Former University of Louisville star Adam Duvall's home run in the bottom of the first inning put the GreenJackets in front 1-0. Duvall leads the South Atlantic League in home runs with 16.
Augusta added a run in the bottom of the second. Ehire Adrianza singled with two outs. Carlos Willoughby followed with another single, and when the ball got by center fielder Emilio King for an error, Adrianza came around to score.
In the bottom of the third, the GreenJackets made it 3-0 when Josh Mazzola singled, went to second on an infield out, to third after a fly ball to right, and scored on a passed ball charged to catcher Chris Wallace.
Augusta doubled its lead in the fifth. With one out, Mazzola and Ryan Lollis hit consecutive singles. After Murilo Gouvea relieved starter Alex Sogard, Rafael Rodriguez struck out, but Jeff Arnold walked, loading the bases. A wild pitch allowed one run to score, and Devin Harris followed with a two-run double to right field, giving the GreenJackets a 6-0 advantage.
The Legends got on the board in the seventh when Wallace hit his 13th home run of the year, a solo shot off Augusta starter Taylor Rogers.
Augusta scored its final two runs in the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Mazzola and Lollis, a wild pitch and a ground out.
Lexington scored twice in the ninth against former Legend Tommy Vessella, who signed with the San Francisco Giants' organization earlier this year. With one out, Wallace doubled and Mike Kvasnicka tripled to produce one run. Kvasnicka came home when Enrique Hernandez grounded out to shortstop, leaving the final margin at 8-3.
Rogers (6-6), who has been named to the Southern Division roster for the South Atlantic League All-Star game June 21, worked the first seven innings to get the win. He allowed just three hits, including the home run by Wallace.
Sogard (1-2), who pitched four and one-third innings, took the loss. Augusta has won the first two games of the four-game series, which continues Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
