Hagerstown Suns News Release
Lakewood, NJ- The Hagerstown Suns (37-25) dropped the series opener at FirstEnergy Park against the Lakewood BlueClaws (30-32) on Sunday afternoon, 5-4. After sweeping the 'Claws in their last trip to Lakewood Township, Hagerstown was subdued by RHP David Buchanan (8-3), the winning pitcher, who went 8.0 innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits, while walking two and fanning six.
The Suns struck first with an RBI double from C David Freitas in the 1st inning tattooed to the left field corner. Freitas was 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
Lakewood answered as 1B Jim Murphy laced an RBI single into shallow left center field in the bottom half of the 1st frame.
With the bases loaded and no outs in the 4th inning, Suns SS Jason Martinson plated RF Bryce Harper, who was hit by a pitch, on a sacrifice fly to deep right center field. Hagerstown, however, would only earn the one run, despite a terrific scoring opportunity.
The BlueClaws would grab the lead in the 4th stanza as C Cameron Rupp ripped a two-RBI double into the left field corner. 3B Travis Mattair, who singled to center field, and RF Domingo Santana, who walked, both came into score.
Hagerstown tied the game at 3-3 in the 6th inning on a Freitas rocket on top of the home run hill in left field. Freitas would hit the only long ball allowed by Buchanan, his seventh of the 2011 campaign.
Suns LHP Robbie Ray, tossed 5.0 innings in which he allowed a season-high three earned runs on five hits to complement three strikeouts, overcoming three walks, but did not factor into the decision.
The 'Claws regained the lead in the 6th inning off LHP Paul Applebee (5-2), the losing pitcher of record, with an RBI single sprayed softly on a line in shallow left center by SS Edgar Duran, scoring Santana, who double down the chalk in left field.
The see-saw battle continued as Hagerstown tied the contest 4-4 in the 7th stanza after 3B Sean Nicol wrapped a double into the right center field gap and CF Michael Taylor drove Nicol to home plate with an RBI single through the hole at shortstop.
However, the BlueClaws would bring to fruition the eventual winning run as a go-ahead tally in the 8th inning came in the form of an RBI double by Santana to the wall in left field, scoring CF Michael Dabbs, who sliced a double into left center field leading off the inning.
RHP Juan Sosa (6 SV) earned his sixth save of the season with a scoreless 9th inning pitched, allowing one hit and striking out one.
The BlueClaws will host the Suns for Game Two on Monday night for a 7:05pm first pitch. The radio flagship of the Hagerstown Suns, WJEJ AM 1240, will provide wall-to-wall radio coverage beginning with a 6:50pm Break Away 2 Sports Lounge Pre-game Show. The Suns will summon RHP Taylor Jordan (6-2, 2.62) to the mound to face Lakewood LHP Ervis Manzanillo (3-3, 5.43).
