Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The South Atlantic League announced on Monday that the Hickory Crawdads, Class A Affiliate of the Texas Rangers, have won both of the SAL Weekly Awards for the week of June 6 - 12, becoming the first team to win both awards in the same week since the Charleston RiverDogs in 2009.
OF Jake Skole was named the Player of the Week and RHP Nick Tepesch won the Pitcher of the Week, helping lead the Crawdads to a 5-1 record during that stretch and pull within two games of the first-place Hagerstown Suns in the first-half title race.
Skole, 19, compiled a .409 batting average (9-for-22) last week, with one home run, two doubles, a triple and nine total RBIs to complement nine runs scored. The Woodstock, GA, native also worked four walks and stole two bases without being caught. Skole capped the week with a 3-for-4 performance in Hickory's 12-3 win in Asheville on Sunday, ripping two doubles and driving in three RBIs with two runs scored. Overall this season, he is hitting .257 with two homers and 25 RBIs in 54 games. Skole was selected out of high school in the first round of the 2010 draft by the Rangers. Tepesch, 22, won his lone start of the week, pitching a dominant seven shutout innings in the 10-3 win against the Lakewood BlueClaws last Tuesday. The Blue Springs, MO, native registered a career-high 10 strikeouts in the start, while scattering only three hits and walking just one batter. In the entire outing, Tepesch did not allow a single BlueClaw to reach third base, and only one runner advanced as far as second base against him. This season, he has gone 2-3 with a 3.55 ERA through 14 outings and eight starts. In 50.2 total innings of work, Tepesch has allowed just 22 runs (20 earned) on 51 hits with 11 walks and 40 strikeouts. Tepesch was selected out of the University of Missouri in the 14th round of the 2010 draft. Click here to visit Tepesch's player page on Hickorycrawdads.com.
