Cosart, Wallace Take Down Zephyrs

Jarred Cosart pitched six scoreless innings, and Brett Wallace had four hits, including a double to spark a three-run sixth to lead the Oklahoma City RedHawks past the New Orleans Zephyrs, 4-1 on Thursday night.

Cosart (7-3) limited the Zephyrs to four hits and struck out eight without issuing a walk to win his second consecutive start. His seven victories are tied for second-most in the Pacific Coast League, and his ERA lowered to 3.09, sixth-best in the league.

The RedHawks committed three errors in the first five innings, allowing the Zephyrs to twice put a runner at third base. In the fourth, the Z's had runners at the corners with two outs, but Cosart got Kyle Skipworth to bounce out to second. The following inning, a two-out double by Bryan Petersen put a pair of runners in scoring position, only to have Cosart strike out Jake Smolinski to escape the threat.

Oklahoma City broke through in the sixth against Zephyrs starter Matt Neil, who had held the RedHawks to three hits over the first five frames. Wallace's double into the left field corner led off the frame, and Neil was lifted after a walk to Jon Singleton.

Jordan Smith came out of the bullpen and allowed a single to Brandon Laird to load the bases, and Carlos Perez sent a sharp grounder through the hole at short to score the game's first run. Che-Hsuan Lin knocked in two runs with a double into the left-center field gap before a double play by Jonathan Villar ended the inning.

Wallace singled with one out in the seventh, and came around to score on another single by Perez, extending the RedHawks ' lead to 4-1. Wallace turned in his first four-hit effort of the season, and his third game with at least three hits in the last nine days to lift his batting average to .329, sixth-best in the PCL.

New Orleans plated a run in the eighth after RedHawks left fielder Jake Elmore misplayed a Joe Mahoney liner into a double, cashing in a one-out walk by Smolinski .

Former Tulane hurler Josh Zeid closed the door in the ninth, striking out the side after a leadoff double by Kyle Skipworth to convert his fifth save.

Neil (2-3) took the loss by yielding two runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked four.

The Zephyrs and RedHawks conclude the series on Friday at 7 p.m.
