Normal CornBelters News Release

NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, came from behind to score a ninth-inning run to win the game and series over the Southern Illinois Miners on Sunday's 4-3 victory at the Corn Crib.

The CornBelters struck first in the opening inning as Santiago Chrino stroked a one-out single and went to third on a base hit to left by Steven Felix, then scored on a delayed steal when a pitchout to catch Felix at second went high.

The Belters added a tally in the second, beginning with a one-out walk to Romulo Ruiz, who moved to third as Normal loaded the bases and scored on a fielder's choice for a 2-0 advantage after two innings.

The Miners grabbed the lead with three unearned runs in the third inning as Carlos Colmenares led off with a double and Ryan Curl was hit by a pitch. Normal starting pitcher Tyler Lavigne threw wildly trying to retire Colmenares at third on a ground ball hit by Tyler Hall, scoring Colmenares and Curl and sending Hall to third. Hall scored on a 6-4-3 double play to give the Miners a 3-2 lead.

The Belters rallied in the seventh with lead-off singles from Keoni Manago and Mike Schwartz, who were sacrificed to second and third. Manago scored on a high chopping fielder's choice by Felix to tie the game at 3-3.

The CornBelters pushed the winning run over in the bottom of the ninth after Manago bounced a one-out double off the batter's eye in center field, and after an intentional walk to Schwartz, Santiago Chrino hit a looping drive down the left field line to score Manago and give the Belters their sixth series win out of the season's seven series to date.

Alan Oaks (2-0) pitched the final two innings for the win while Reese McGraw (0-1) took the loss.

The CornBelters take Monday off before continuing the homestand with a three-game series beginning Tuesday against the Washington Wild Things.

THE NIBLET : The CornBelters are still seeking host families for the 2013 season. The "Host Family Program" provides players with a home away from home. It enables them to live with a family, couple or individual in the Bloomington-Normal area. It is derived from a variety of factors from a player's standpoint. Such factors include: the difficulty in finding a lease for just several months, the possibility of playing for the CornBelters for a limited time and/or the limited salaries that accompany professional baseball at this level of play.
