Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA--A dominant pitching performance by Washington starter Shawn Smith and a mega offensive output by the Wild Things bats combined for the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, 6-1 victory over the Lake Erie Crushers on an overcast Sunday afternoon at CONSOL Energy Park.

The righty Smith, threw his first professional complete game of his baseball career going the distance. On the afternoon, Smith pitched nine solid innings, allowed just one run on eight hits and struck out five Lake Erie batters.

For the third consecutive game, Lake Erie manufactured the first run of the game after a RBI sacrifice fly by Crusher shortstop Juan Sanchez. But, that would be all for Lake Erie as the native Californian Smith shutdown the Crusher offense and did not walk a batter in his nine innings of work.

In the bottom of the third, five consecutive baserunners for Washington helped open up their scoring in the frame when an apparent inning-ending double play miscue by the Crushers defense allowed Beatty to jog into second. The next batter, third baseman Jovan Rosa, doubled off the outfield wall, scoring Beatty for the Things' first run of the afternoon.

Making quite the immediate impact, Rogelio Noris's first triple on the early year broke a one to one tie and scored Mark Samuelson, who previously hit a seeing-eye-single up the middle, to give Washington a 3-1 lead.

Up by two, Beatty cushioned the lead for the Wild Things, smashing his second two-run homerun of the series to put the club ahead by four. Shain Stoner would add a solo shot of his own in the sixth putting Washington ahead 6-1.

The Wild Things go on the road for a three game set and will return to action at CONSOL Energy Park on Friday June 14th. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office.
