Miners Fall Short in Normal

Normal, IL - Despite a solid spot start from Travis Bradshaw, the Miners lost to the Normal CornBelters 4-3. CornBelters second baseman Santiago Chrino hit a walk-off base hit off Miners reliever Reese McGraw to bring in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Bradshaw pitched five innings and allowed two runs off four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. The Miners are now 10-11 on the season.

Normal jumped to an early 2-0 lead through two innings. Southern Illinois answered back in the top of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead off CornBelters starter Tyler Lavigne.

Third baseman Carlos Colmenares led off the inning with a double and left fielder Ryan Curl reached first base on a hit by pitch. With both runners on and no one out, center fielder Tyler hit a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over to second and third. In the process, pitcher Tyler Lavigne fielded the ball and over threw third baseman TJ Gavlik, which allowed Colmenares and Curl to score and tie the game at two. Hall advanced to third base on the play.

Short stop Tyler Stubblefield was hit by a pitch by Lavigne and the Miners had runners on first and third base with no outs. First baseman Carlos Mendez grounded into a double play which allowed Hall to score and give Southern Illinois a 3-2 lead.

Miners reliever Dayne Quist pitched 1 2/3 innings and allowed the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Quist gave up three hits and struck out one batter. Reliever Matt Sergey pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Quist.

The Miners return to action on Tuesday as they welcome in the Rockford Aviators. First pitch will get underway at 7:05 pm at Rent One Park. Brian Oliver will be on the mound in search of his third victory with the Miners. He'll be opposed by Aviators left hander Jon Gulbranson.
