Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, were swept in the final two games of season in a doubleheader Sunday night at the Corn Crib. The 'Belters lost the first game 7-1 and the second game 7-0.
The Slammers opened up the scoring in the first game of the night. A leadoff walk by Abel Nieves came around to score on a two out RBI single by David Christensen. Both Christensen and Josh Lyon then crossed home after Andrew Bauer hit a base clearing double, giving Joliet a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning.
The CornBelters got their first and only run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Pat McKenna hit a two out home run, cutting Joliet's lead to 3-1.
Joliet added to their lead in the sixth inning with a pair of two run home runs hit by Kyle Maunus and Christensen, leaving the final score at 7-1.
Joliet pitcher Jacob Sanchez (5-2) received the win while Normal's Tyler Lavigne (5-10) got the loss.
In the nightcap, the Slammers jumped to an early lead, putting two on the board after leadoff hitter Brad Netzel was hit by a pitch and advanced to second when Abel Nieves was walked to first. Both Netzel and Nievez went home on an RBI single by Maunus, giving Joliet a 2-0 lead in the first.
Maunus hit a lead off home run, Joliet's third of the night, leaving the Slammers with a 3-0 advantage in the fourth inning.
Slammers continued to add runs when a lead off walk came home in the fifth inning, extending Joliet's lead to 4-0.
Maunus and Christensen gave the Slammers some insurance in the seventh, batting home Netzel and Andrew Brauer respectively. A wild pitch then allowed Maunus to score leaving the score at a final 7-0.
The 'Belters could not get their offense started and ended the game scoreless.
Brendon Smith (2-8) of Normal got the loss, while Joliet pitcher Tommy Mendoza (5-7) was credited with the win.
The CornBelters finished their 2012 season with a record of 29-67 and have a total record of 119-169 over the past three seasons.
Music From the Mound will come to the Corn Crib on Monday September 3, 2102 beginning at 6:00 p.m.
