Rockford RiverHawks News Release

SAUGET, Ill. - The Rockford RiverHawks took a loss and a tie in a rain-saturated doubleheader on Saturday at GCS Ballpark.

The Gateway Grizzlies shut out the RiverHawks, 13-0, in the opener. In the nightcap, Gateway rallied from a five-run deficit to tie the game at 5-5 after the seven regulation innings. The game was called at that point as a tie, a first in RiverHawks history and the second in Grizzlies history.

In game one, John Shelby singled in a two-out run in the first inning for the Grizzlies. They scored twice in the fourth inning and Antone DeJesus increased the lead to 5-0 with a two-run homer in the fifth inning.

Gateway starter Brett Zawacki (2-2) pitched five shutout innings for the win. He and Ja'Vaun West combined on a five-hitter. Rockford starter Nick Anderson (1-4) gave up eight runs on eight hits and six walks in five-plus innings and took the loss.

The game was delayed 11 minutes in the bottom of the third because of rain.

The remnants of Hurricane Issac played havoc with the nightcap. Rain started early in the game and continued nearly without interruption.

The RiverHawks loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning and scored on a double-play groundout by Rudy Wilson and a single by Jimmy Parque. Michael Hur led off the third inning with a triple and scored on a Trevor Whyte groundout. Evan Button singled home two runs in the fourth inning.

Rockford starter Cody Hallahan didn't give up a hit until Richie Jimenez, Jr. hit a one-out, three-run homer in the fifth inning.

Gateway rallied to tie the game in the seventh. Rockford closer Garrett Granitz hit the first two batters of the inning and a sacrifice moved both runners up. Jonathan Johnson hit an infield single to shortstop to bring home one run, and an errant throw on the play by Evan Button brought in the tying run.

Whyte was 0-for-7 in the doubleheader and his 15-game hitting streak, the longest by a RiverHawk in two years, ended.

The RiverHawks play the Grizzlies in the final game of their 11th season, scheduled for 6:05 p.m. Sunday.
