Last time out...
Randy Wells walked with the bases loaded in the 10th inning as the Normal CornBelters (29-65) defeated the Joliet Slammers (35-58) by a score of 5-4 on Friday night. The game was not without drama as the Slammers entered the ninth trailing 4-1. With one out Andrew Brauer tallied his fourth hit of the game with a single to right-center. Then Josh Lyon smacked a pinch-hit two-run home run to make it a one run game. With two down Brad Netzel was hit by the pitch. Then Abel Nieves hit a grounder to Wells at third. Wells threw low to first and the ball got away. Netzel scored on the play to tie the game at four. But Normal won the game in the 10th against Joliet reliever Chase Doremus (2-4). Ernie Banks doubled to start the inning. A walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases for Wells who made up for his earlier mistake by drawing the game-winning walk.
For Starters Game One...
Jacob Sanchez is coming off a loss to the Washington Wild Things on August 28. He went five innings, giving up seven hits and five runs. Sanchez walked one and struck out four in the 12-4 loss for Joliet. His one outing this year against Normal was outstanding as he went six shutout innings to beat the CornBelters. Sanchez has gone at least five innings in every start except one (he was ejected in the third inning against Florence.) Sanchez was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012. Sanchez finished the 2012 Iowa Wesleyan season with a 10-2 record and a 2.42 earned run average, including 111 strikeouts, 12 walks, 71 hits allowed and 28 runs allowed (25 earned) in 93 innings pitched. He led the MCC in strikeouts and innings pitched, was second in wins and third in earned run average and opponents' batting average (.208). Sanchez obliterated the Iowa Wesleyan single season strikeout record, becoming the first player in school history to go over 100 K's in a season, and also tied the school record for wins in a season. He also was a recipient of a Gold Glove award with one error in 29 chances in the field.
For Starters Game Two...
Tommy Mendoza is coming off a solid effort against Washington on August 29. He went six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits in a 3-0 loss for Joliet. The right-hander is looking for his first win on the road since June 14 against River City. Mendoza made his first start for the Slammers on June 27, 2011 and went on to post a 6-2 record during the regular season. He won both his starts in the playoffs while posting a 1.50 ERA. Mendoza was a 5th round draft pick of the Angels in 2005. He has a career ERA of 3.97 over six seasons in affiliated baseball. The right-handed pitcher rose to the Triple-A level at the age of 21 in 2009. He was 7-7 with a 3.36 ERA for Double-A Arkansas and was named a Texas League All Star before earning the promotion to Salt Lake. With the Bees he went 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA. Mendoza suffered from multiple injuries in 2010 which only allowed him to pitch in 10 games.
Brauer coming up big...
Andrew Brauer tied a franchise record with four hits Friday. He has hit safely in seven of the past nine games for Joliet.
Losing streaks...
The Slammers are currently on a 15-game losing streak, the longest losing streak in franchise history. Joliet is also on a 10-game road losing streak, their longest ever on the road. They are currently a franchise worst 23 games under the .500 mark.
Error indicator...
Joliet is 11-45 in games when they make an error. They are 24-13 in games when they do not make an error.
