Bobby Pritchett fanned twelve batters in seven innings, as the Normal Cornbelters held off the Florence Freedom in the finale of their three game series, 6-4 at Champion Window Field on Friday evening.

Normal jumped on top just two batters into the contest. Jeff Cowan walked and was tripled in by Brad Augustin. Daniel Cox then plated Augustin with an RBI single and a 2-0 lead after half an inning.

The Freedom cut the lead in half in the second. Stephen Shults led with a double, moved up on a Tim Grogan single, and scored on a Jimmy Baker sacrifice fly.

The Cornbelters increased the lead to 4-1 in the third, on a two run single by Jonathan Ross.

Florence would answer immediately, as Billy Mottram and Johnny Welch homered in the frame to cut the lead to 4-3.

The Cornbelters would tack on two more tallies in the top of the ninth against the Freedom bullpen. Will Palmer entered the game for the Freedom and hit the leadoff batter, Chad Rebecca. Mike Dufek singled him to second, and Liam Ohlmann relieved Palmer. After retiring Andrew Barbaro on a popped up bunt, a wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third. The fifth run scored on a passed ball, and then a bunt single by Jeff Cowan plated the second run of the frame to make it 6-3.

Florence would challenge in the ninth, as Jimmy Baker connected for a solo home run off of Normal closer Mike LaLuna to make it 6-4. One out later, Justin Pickett doubled to send the tying run to the plate, but Michael Wheeler flied out to right to end the game.

Sean Lydon (0-3) took the defeat on the hill, allowing five hits and four runs, all earned, walking four and striking out two. Mike Mehlich had an outstanding outing out of the bullpen, working 2 2/3 innings, fanning five. Palmer and Ohlmann finished up.
